We turned 1 year and are enjoying our life in Chennai. As you may know, as children, we have no worries and our day is typically spent in eating, playing and sleeping.
In the 1 year, we had spent most of our time indoors. We were not exposed to the Chennai outdoors, other than our trips to the doctor for regular check ups and to visit temples.
There are a few things that we have seen during our trips that were quiet disturbing and worrisome. We would like to highlight those to you and get a quick remedy for these issues. If these things aren't fixed with your help, our future life in chennai will lack the basic quality and be filled with low standard of living, as every year pass by.
1) We saw open drainage on every road side, filled with sewage and filthy stagnant water. No wonder we were bitten by mosquitoes almost every day. The stench is very bad. We heard that these open drainage were built to let rain water flow out into catchment areas, but people and businesses have been misusing these to let their sewage and other waste water. We are a great city filled with educated people, but when it comes to hygiene and basic cleanliness, we lag big time.
When the individual isn't ready to live with self discipline and care for surroundings, we would request eminent and powerful individuals like you to put together a strong and effective plan, to make our streets free of open drains and stench-free and livable. Please do the needful. We want fresh air and freedom from mosquitoes and illness like dengue.
2) We also noticed a scary phenomenon were most of the houses in our neighborhood and in many places in chennai, are sinking below the ground level. Its quiet puzzling to see houses that are a few feet down from the road level. We heard that the municipalities responsible for re-laying roads, lay the roads on top of the existing roads without scraping and de-icing it first. As they do this every time, the height of the road goes higher and higher and the houses and shops on both side of the roads goes down and down.
Even though we are kids, we know that, this is not the right way to do it. We should remove the existing bad road before relaying fresh gravels and tar. This is such a basic design principle.
We have seen some houses that were more than few steps down from the road level. During the last rain season, the houses were flooded with rain water and drainage sewage water causing major trouble for several families in many neighborhoods.
When the people responsible to design and lay proper roads are not planning for future and lack the understanding of basic gravity, we would request eminent and powerful individuals like you to put together a strong and effective plan, to make our roads maintain its level (both in altitude and quality).
There are several other things that were equally alarming, such as encroachment of lakes and making them residentail plots illegally, dumping of waste in public places and water bodies, lack of respect to nature and trees and rain..... We will raise those to your attention, once the above two get some healing with your power.
We sincerely hope you will take the necessary steps to find a resolution at the very earliest. We thank you both for staying on top of all the other day-to-day issues and keeping our city, a better place to live.
with hope and respect,
Thank you,
Sunil Jr. & Sunil Jr.
